Additional sum of $13,370,500 has been invested by Tiamin Rice Mill Limited to raise its production capacity from the current 320 tonnes to 1,520 tonnes per day, the Managing Director of the company Aminu Ahmed has said.

Mr Ahmed disclosed this yesterday when he led the management team of the company on a courtesy call on the Indian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Abhay Thakur, in his office in Abuja.

The MD said the policy of the present administration, especially the ban on smuggling and the interventions given to them by the Central Bank of Nigeria, have helped immensely in boosting local production of rice.

He revealed that the company was established in 2016 in Kano and started production of rice in 2018 with 320 tonnes per day.

Mr Ahmed disclosed that the existing production line in Kano would be expanded from 320 tonnes to 920 tonnes next year, while a new production line would start production of 600 tonnes per day in Bauchi by May 2020.

“We are now investing $13,370,500 to boost our production capacity to 1,520 tonnes per day. Already we have placed orders for all the machinery needed, and all arrangements are on top gear to meet the deadline we have set.

“By next year, we plan to become the biggest rice producers not only in Kano but in the whole country.

“Our watchword is quality and affordability. We produce one of the finest brands in Nigeria that can compete with foreign rice brands in terms of quality,” Mr Ahmed said.

He appreciated the relative durability of Indian machines which, he said, are the secret behind the quality of Tiamin Rice.

The managing director then thanked the Indian High Commission for its support and sought further cooperation in the areas of easing trade relations between his company and Indian partners.

In his response, the high commissioner thanked Tiamin Rice for the courtesy call, expressing delight and appreciation for patronising Indian machines.

Mr Thakur expressed hope that the policy of boosting local production would be sustained beyond the present administration to enable local industries in the country to grow.Briefing journalists after the visit, the Managing Director of Tiamin Rice commended the federal government for supporting local rice production and the state governments for giving them enabling environments.

The Inspector General of Police IGP and the Attorney General of Kano state have at last bowed to a federal high court judgment which ordered them to unseal a mult  million naira Tiamin Rice Company unlawfully sealed up about two months ago.

The order for unsealing of the company issued by Justice Okon Abang was said to have been fully complied with and the rice mill handed over to the owners.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria SAN, Chief Adegboyega Awomolo who is lead counsel to the owners of the Kano based Rice company informed Justice Abang that all barricades erected at the company premises by police have been removed

The Senior Counsel while reporting the development to court showered encomiums on the Inspector General of Police for yielding to court order.

By the action,  Awomolo said that the Police Chief has demonstrated loyalty to the Constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria.

He further informed the Judge that the IGP has demonstrated faithfulness to the oath of his office and also demonstrated obedience to the rule of law which requested obedience’s to court judgment for IGP and subordinates.

PRNigeria reports that the Court had at the last hearing, threatened to jail Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice as well as the Commissioner of Police in the state over their unlawful closure of the multi-million naira Tiamin Rice Company.

Justice Abang, had while issuing the threat, warned that unless the Attorney General and the Commissioner of Police obeyed his judgment ordering the unseal of the rice company, they “will be guilty of contempt of court and will be committed to prison.”

The threat of the judge followed the refusal of the Attorney General and the police boss to appear before him to give reasons on why they sealed up the rice company and stopped production without a lawful court order.

The Tiamin Rice Mill, Tiamin Multi-services Global Limited and Alhaji Aliyu Ali Ibrahim, had jointly dragged the Inspector General of Police, Kano State Commissioner of Police, Kano State government and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) before the court seeking the enforcement of their fundamental rights.

They had complained of unlawful closure of their rice mill without any court order and prayed Justice Abang to order them out of the company to enable them resume production.

Although, Justice Abang ordered the four respondents to appear before him on April 27 to defend their actions, non of them however, obeyed the court order and were not represented by lawyers despite being served hearing notices and newspaper publications to that effect.

Justice Abang  had while granting the prayers of the three applicants, declared them as “lawful owners and occupiers of their property in Kano and are entitled to own property and enjoy or occupation, possession, and use of same.”

The court had also ordered that “the sealing off of the rice processing mill and denial of lawful access without any order of competent court of law backing up the sealing off constituted a violation of the owners’ fundamental rights under Sections 33, 34, 43 and 44 of the 1999 Constitution and is therefore illegal and unconstitutional.”

Justice Abang had voided the action of Kano State in sealing off the rice company and stopping of production without any notice or fair hearing, declaring it as an unlawful act.

The judge had ordered the Inspector General of Police, the Kano State Police Command, their agents and privies to immediately take possession of the rice mill company from the Kano state government and grant access to the rightful owners for the purpose of continuing their lawful business.

Justice Abang  had also restrained the four respondents and their servants”from continuing their unlawful acts of sealing off the rice company”, and ordered the Inspector General of Police and the NSCDC to unconditionally unseal the factory.

The judge while restraining Kano State government from further interfering with, demolishing or attempting to cause harm to the owners, ordered the respondents to pay a sum of N300, 000 to the applicants before taking any step in the proceedings and that the applicants “shall endorse Form 48 on the enrolled judgment order and serve same on the four respondents.”

Kano Commissioner risk jail over sealing of Tiamin Rice factory

IGP, Kano commissioner risk jail over sealing of rice factory

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Kano State Government and the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to immediately unseal the premises of a rice processing factory, Tiamin Rice Limited, in Kano State.

Justice Okon Abang of the Abuja division of the court gave the order which was predicated on contempt proceedings initiated by Form 48 Order 9 Rule 13 of the court bordering on notice of consequence of disobedience to order of the court.

In the certified true copy of the order of the court, Justice Abang ordered the Inspector-General of Police, Commissioner of Police, Kano State, Government of Kano State as well as the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), who were listed as 1st to 4th respondents respectively, to immediately unseal the premises of the rice processing factory or be liable to be committed to prison.

The court held that it was satisfied that the respondents had been duly served with all court’s processes as well as the court’s order directing them to appear before it on April 27th, but ‘they failed to appear before the court and offered no reason for being absent in court.’

In considering the applicants’ (Tiamin Rice Limited, Tiamin Multi Service Global Limited and Alhaji Aliyu Ali Ibrahim who are the 1st to 3rd applicants, respectively) reliefs as contained in the originating motion on notice dated April 20th, Justice Abang declared that ‘the applicants are lawful owners and occupiers of their property situated at C14, A. A. Shehu House, Amana City, Zaria Road, Kano and are entitled to own property and enjoy peaceful occupation, possession and use of same including the right of ingress and egress to the said property, as guaranteed under the 1999 constitution of Nigeria (as amended).’

The court further held that the sealing of the business premises of the applicants’ rice processing mill and the consequent denial of lawful access without any order of a competent court of law backing up the said denial of access constitute a violation of the applicants’ fundamental rights guaranteed under the Nigerian constitution and, therefore, ‘illegal and unconstitutional’.

‘The continued closure of the 1st applicant’s premises or restriction of movement by the 3rd respondent through its agents is unlawful, unconstitutional and constitute an infringement of the applicant’s fundamental right to human dignity, right to personal liberty, and right to freedom of movement guaranteed under sections 34, 35 and 41 of the constitution and articles 5, 6 and 12 (1) of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Right Act.

‘The 1st and 4th respondents, whether jointly and or severally by themselves, their agents, employees, operative(s), detectives, officer(s), or howsoever by whatever name called, shall forthwith unconditionally unseal, takeover and put into possession the applicant’s rice mill factory.

‘The Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Kano State being an agent of Kano State government, the 3rd judgment debtor, herein shall, forthwith, ensure compliance with the instant subsisting judgment order of this court,’ the judge held.

Justice Abang slammed the sum of N300,000 as cost in favour of the applicants/judgment creditors payable by the respondents/judgment debtors before taking any steps in the proceedings.
